Your Boat Water Filter Necessities

By Angie Walters

Aging. That is such a little word, with such a big meaning. When things age, we know they are getting closer to the end of their lives. We try all we can to keep age at bay but, yet it still comes. It is the same with people, cars, and boats. A boat water filter is definitely an article you will need from time to time.

Filters for cooling, raw water, fresh water, and pumps; the list is extensive. Even if you do not know much about your boat, you can find experts who know the mechanics of your vessel. Just as you hire a mechanic to take care of the maintenance you require for your automobile, you can hire a professional to care for your boat.

If you want to find out about those who work on boats, then you need to get your butt down to a boatyard. Stores that sell life jackets and other such gear will have at least, one knowledgeable person who can probably help you. Some shops have displays which allow technicians to put their business cards, so that potential customers can have the information. Coworkers and other acquaintances may be able to steer you toward companies that work on boats.

After you have picked a reputable enterprise, take time to get to know the personnel who work there. Being on a first name basis can sometimes allow you the upper hand when getting work done. People are more willing to do for you if they see you are friendly and willing to make their jobs easier. Every person works differently and you have to take this into account.

Some people are more picky than others. I happen to be one who is more picky. There are seven people who work in the shop that handles the maintenance of my automobile. One person, out of all the seven, is the only one I want near my vehicle. This is just the way I like it and that is the way it will stay. This may be the way you want your boat to be dealt with and that is your right. Hey, it is your cash that will be handed over when the job is done.

Have a working relationship with your vessel professional. Openly state your fears and, in most cases, he will give you a break down of what needs to be done immediately and what can wait for a bit. These technicians do try to please their customers and because they enjoy their work, they want to help you to keep from spending too much money all at once.

The Invention Of Lightweight Luggage

By Alexander Stone

Back in the olden days, people were not much concerned about the weight of the luggage that they needed to carry along during their trips. They focused more on the looks and durability. Most of the bags used were made out of sturdy leather with classic on them. Traveling in the 21st century has changed dramatically. Gone were the days of having to hurdle hours and hours riding a train or days and days of traveling in a ship. Now, air travel has dominated the world through cutting the traveling time into half. Together with air travel's development is the rising of light weight luggage.

What is light weight luggage? It is a luggage made out of light weight material that weighs around 9-10 lbs. Even though leather is still used as a material in making bags and luggage due to its good appearance and ability to withstand damage, weight will always be an issue. For the simple reason that leather is a heavy material and add up weight to the whole luggage itself. In order to get the perfect light weight luggage be sure it's made out of nylon and it has honey comb frames on it. There are a variety of designs to choose from.

When it comes to material, stay away with leather typed luggage. Choose those made out of nylon. Consider the means of transporting the luggage. There are different ways of transporting the luggage. The preference is all up to you. You might like those with top or side handles, back pack straps, slip back or built-in wheels. It all depends on which you find comfortable and more convenient for you to choose.

Of course, it is a good thing to carry luggage that looks good and in style. You can go for a tote, a trolley, suit case or a duffel bag. If you are going to a weekend getaway, a duffel bag is a good option. For a one-week holiday vacation, carrying a wheeled trolley is highly advisable. To add a little bit of glamor and value, getting designer's bags is a plus. There are high end bags available on the market; you can get either a Gucci or a Louis Vuitton. However, you can still go for the less expensive ones such as JanSport, Traveler's Choice, or eBags.

If you love traveling and you do it once or twice a week, then you need to get sturdy luggage that will last longer. However, if you just travel once or twice a year buying different sorts of bags will be a good idea. Choose those bags made of not so sturdy fabrics, it can save you money. One last thing, you need to read the tags. A bag might be made out of 500 denier Polyester while the other one is made out of 800 denier Cordura. Both bags might look the same but they differ much on the quality. The more expensive the fabric is, the longer it can last wear and tear. - 31901

Anchoring with Chain or Line

By Capt. Doug Malat

There are several ways to go with Anchor rode. You can use anchor line/rope or chain. I had been for many years a fan of rope with a 20 foot length of chain from the anchor. The length of chain from the anchor protected the line from getting chafed from dragging on the sea floor as the boat would swing in the wind or change of tide. The chain would rub along the bottom to a new position instead of your bare anchor line as it bumped or snagged shells, rocks, or debris on the bay or sea floor. By using the chain off the anchor, you've added some weight which keeps the anchor line parallel along the bottom, making your boat or yacht anchor always bite deeper into the bottom.

As my cruising area expanded, I noticed other new or used boats and yachts anchoring with all chain. That ratt-a-tat-tat of the chain going overboard is very distinguishable, and as years passed by, I heard this sound more and more. Other than being able to let out much less rode if you have all chain, I noticed another factor in direct relationship between the two. With anchor rode of line/rope, you swing around a lot more and also feel much more movement when the wind freshens. With chain for your anchor rode, you seem to swing less and as the wind gets fresher, you also seem to just ease back only a little as the wind blows. It's like slow motion.

When diving below the water, I have found a difference between the all chain anchor rode and the line/rope anchor rode. With the all chain anchor rode, you can see it go right for the bottom and then head in the direction of the boat anchor. As your boat eases back from a puff of wind, pull makes the chain lifts off the bottom. It is a lot of weight when the chain has to lift off the bottom, which in turn doesn't let you move back too much. With line/rope anchor rode, that same puff of wind pushes your boat or yacht back quickly becuase there is no weight to the line/rope. It then pulls the chain by the anchor and sometimes gives you a jerk as it tugs on the anchor. Also when anchored and swinging in the wind, the anchor rode with line/rope takes on a full swing of the line you have out. With the all chain rode, its weight alone keeps you in a tight swing so you don't feel the motion.

In windier Anchorages, it is good to use an all chain rode to keep that anchor biting the bottom, but wind this strong can put more strain on the chain links and the boat or yacht by pulling constantly and also jerking. At this time you should hook a line/rope right to the chain. Use about 20 feet and tie the line/rope from the chain to a cleat. This section will now let the stretching abilities of the line/rope to have less strain and stress to the boat and on the chain links.

You can get Anchor Chain in different tensile and numerous sizes to match your boat or yacht requirements. Take some considerations to the storage and weight of all chain rode, but most boats and yachts today have anchor windlass to give you the ease of letting out and/or bringing in the chain. Take a look around the harbor the next time you anchor...You will see the difference as the boats move in the wind, whether they have all chain or line/rope anchor rodes. - 31901

Traditional Wood Dory Blueprints

By Jim Hallsey

So you would like to build a Dory? Good idea! It's a beautiful boat style. And when you are finished, you'll be adding towards the time-honored maritime traditions of useful boats. Few people choose this particular design, therefore your work will be demanding yet oddly gratifying. You will have every right to be proud to be the owner of your own Dory.

Finding a set of Dory plans will be the first challenge. Once you find a source (there are many online), your next move will be to acquire a set for your own. Once you get them and you've taken a short while to look at them, several things grow to be obvious. First, the plans should include a list of materials. You'll need to find a supply of these components. Some of them can be found locally, but sometimes you might have to order things from some of the many good Marine Supply businesses out there. Specialty hardware comes to mind, for example.oarlocks, etc. Your plans will most likely list some sources for supplies.

The plans may show what sort of support platform is needed to build your Dory. Some plans may call for an easy strong-back. Others may indicate a framework especially made for that plan. Follow the recommendation of the designer of the plans.

Now for the big one. You will have to determine whether you need to build outside or indoors. Both options have their strong points. If you build outdoors, you'll need to protect your project from the elements. The majority of outdoor builders work with a tarpaulin or another kind of cover. However, you are at the mercy of the weather. Those who build indoors, in the garage or workshop, must contend with the issue of enough ventilation. Paints, varnishes, a number of adhesives as well as Fiberglas resins possess harmful fumes that must be ventilated. Several toxic gases can be even flammable, therefore get a effective fire extinguisher.

Your plans may have most of these details included, however thinking about this stuff ahead of time will be worth the effort. Your boat is going to be a source of pride and you're sure to boast a little also. You'll be joining a group of proud boat builders when your project is complete. - 31901

Boat Auction Processes

By Rick Dupont

People are only starting to realise how popular boat auctions actually are. People choose boat auctions for a number of reasons, for instance in many cases you can get boats super cheaply when compared to getting from a dealer. Another reason is finance, If you have poor finance you may find it easier to get money loaned at an auction house then a dealer. Also many people find that rare boats are often sold via an auction from peoples estates after they have passed away, this is actually common.

Although there are plenty of different systems the thing is that most auction houses have the same process . The first difference is registration whereby some auction houses make people register and some don't it mainly differs depending on how the business wants to track the buyers. The fact is once the bidding starts the boat is for sale. Once the Auction has started every one that is interested bids and the higher bidder wins.

It's Easy To Understand Auctions

The auctions themselves are usually very simple: a boat goes up for bid, bids are put up and the boat goes home with whoever bids the most. In almost all cases, the former owner of the boat has to supply the boat auction house with paperwork that details a boat's history and proof of its condition. This ensures that the boat is not, first and foremost, stolen property and it helps to establish what a new owner can expect out of a boat, especially if it's purchased with damage to it.

Before an auction there are some very important things that need to be done. One of the most important things is you need to know exactly the type of boat you need this can only be done by research. When researching you need to focus on what you will be doing with the boat, what type of boat is right for your intended uses. The most important thing about buying your boat from the auction is to make sure that you buy the boat you want not just, buy for the fact of getting a boat, as there will always be more auctions. - 31901

By Rick Dupont

Boats are a lot of fun in the summertime and you can use them for so many different activities. From water skiing to fishing, boats are definitely great to have around and if you want to save money and shop for used boats instead of new, there are a few tips you will want to remember. The last thing you want, even if you are not paying much money for it, is an unreliable and rusty piece of garbage. Shop online through sites like Kijiji and Craigslist which always have lots of great listings but you will have to shop carefully. If the seller is located a fair distance away, chances are that you are not going to be able to check the boat out firsthand before deciding whether or not you want to buy it.

An important thing to remember is that you need to know the functions that are most important for you. The cuddy Boat is one of the best suited for over night and general boating activities. Make sure you always get an opportunity to see the boat in person before handing over cash. Try to keep on the look out for moss, or crack and smudges to be sure that you can be sure of the previous owners treatment of the boat.

Always check the Gel-Coat on used boats because this is supposed to be waxed annually. Make sure you ask the seller lots of questions to gain more insight, for instance you would want to inquire as to why they were selling the boat. Ask the seller why it is they decided to get rid of the boat, because this could give you a lot of insight into the condition of the boat. If they seem to avoid the question and do not want to answer your questions, you should be a little wary of going ahead with the deal.

The mechanical aspects of used boats are perhaps the most important of all. A boat can look fantastic from the outside but if the engine and other mechanical parts are junk, the boat is not going to be worth anything. It will be particularly important to check for heavy deposits of grime near the seals.
