Aging. That is such a little word, with such a big meaning. When things age, we know they are getting closer to the end of their lives. We try all we can to keep age at bay but, yet it still comes. It is the same with people, cars, and boats. A boat water filter is definitely an article you will need from time to time.

Filters for cooling, raw water, fresh water, and pumps; the list is extensive. Even if you do not know much about your boat, you can find experts who know the mechanics of your vessel. Just as you hire a mechanic to take care of the maintenance you require for your automobile, you can hire a professional to care for your boat.

If you want to find out about those who work on boats, then you need to get your butt down to a boatyard. Stores that sell life jackets and other such gear will have at least, one knowledgeable person who can probably help you. Some shops have displays which allow technicians to put their business cards, so that potential customers can have the information. Some people are more picky than others. I happen to be one who is more picky. There are seven people who work in the shop that handles the maintenance of my automobile. One person, out of all the seven, is the only one I want near my vehicle. This is just the way I like it and that is the way it will stay. This may be the way you want your boat to be dealt with and that is your right. Hey, it is your cash that will be handed over when the job is done.

Have a working relationship with your vessel professional. Openly state your fears and, in most cases, he will give you a break down of what needs to be done immediately and what can wait for a bit. The Invention Of Lightweight Luggage

By Alexander Stone

Back in the olden days, people were not much concerned about the weight of the luggage that they needed to carry along during their trips. They focused more on the looks and durability. Most of the bags used were made out of sturdy leather with classic on them. Traveling in the 21st century has changed dramatically. Gone were the days of having to hurdle hours and hours riding a train or days and days of traveling in a ship. Now, air travel has dominated the world through cutting the traveling time into half. Together with air travel's development is the rising of light weight luggage.

What is light weight luggage? It is a luggage made out of light weight material that weighs around 9-10 lbs. Even though leather is still used as a material in making bags and luggage due to its good appearance and ability to withstand damage, weight will always be an issue. For the simple reason that leather is a heavy material and add up weight to the whole luggage itself. In order to get the perfect light weight luggage be sure it's made out of nylon and it has honey comb frames on it. There are a variety of designs to choose from.

When it comes to material, stay away with leather typed luggage. Choose those made out of nylon. Consider the means of transporting the luggage. There are different ways of transporting the luggage. The preference is all up to you. You might like those with top or side handles, back pack straps, slip back or built-in wheels. It all depends on which you find comfortable and more convenient for you to choose.

Of course, it is a good thing to carry luggage that looks good and in style. You can go for a tote, a trolley, suit case or a duffel bag. If you are going to a weekend getaway, a duffel bag is a good option. For a one-week holiday vacation, carrying a wheeled trolley is highly advisable. To add a little bit of glamor and value, getting designer's bags is a plus. There are high end bags available on the market; you can get either a Gucci or a Louis Vuitton. However, you can still go for the less expensive ones such as JanSport, Traveler's Choice, or eBags.

If you love traveling and you do it once or twice a week, then you need to get sturdy luggage that will last longer. However, if you just travel once or twice a year buying different sorts of bags will be a good idea. Choose those bags made of not so sturdy fabrics, it can save you money. One last thing, you need to read the tags. A bag might be made out of 500 denier Polyester while the other one is made out of 800 denier Cordura. Both bags might look the same but they differ much on the quality. The more expensive the fabric is, the longer it can last wear and tear. - 31901

Anchoring with Chain or Line

By Capt. Doug Malat

There are several ways to go with Anchor rode. You can use anchor line/rope or chain. I had been for many years a fan of rope with a 20 foot length of chain from the anchor. The length of chain from the anchor protected the line from getting chafed from dragging on the sea floor as the boat would swing in the wind or change of tide. The chain would rub along the bottom to a new position instead of your bare anchor line as it bumped or snagged shells, rocks, or debris on the bay or sea floor. By using the chain off the anchor, you've added some weight which keeps the anchor line parallel along the bottom, making your boat or yacht anchor always bite deeper into the bottom.

As my cruising area expanded, I noticed other new or used boats and yachts anchoring with all chain. That ratt-a-tat-tat of the chain going overboard is very distinguishable, and as years passed by, I heard this sound more and more. Other than being able to let out much less rode if you have all chain, I noticed another factor in direct relationship between the two. With anchor rode of line/rope, you swing around a lot more and also feel much more movement when the wind freshens. With chain for your anchor rode, you seem to swing less and as the wind gets fresher, you also seem to just ease back only a little as the wind blows. It's like slow motion.

When diving below the water, I have found a difference between the all chain anchor rode and the line/rope anchor rode. With the all chain anchor rode, you can see it go right for the bottom and then head in the direction of the boat anchor. As your boat eases back from a puff of wind, pull makes the chain lifts off the bottom. It is a lot of weight when the chain has to lift off the bottom, which in turn doesn't let you move back too much. With line/rope anchor rode, that same puff of wind pushes your boat or yacht back quickly becuase there is no weight to the line/rope. It then pulls the chain by the anchor and sometimes gives you a jerk as it tugs on the anchor. Also when anchored and swinging in the wind, the anchor rode with line/rope takes on a full swing of the line you have out. With the all chain rode, its weight alone keeps you in a tight swing so you don't feel the motion.

In windier Anchorages, it is good to use an all chain rode to keep that anchor biting the bottom, but wind this strong can put more strain on the chain links and the boat or yacht by pulling constantly and also jerking. At this time you should hook a line/rope right to the chain. Use about 20 feet and tie the line/rope from the chain to a cleat. This section will now let the stretching abilities of the line/rope to have less strain and stress to the boat and on the chain links.

You can get Anchor Chain in different tensile and numerous sizes to match your boat or yacht requirements. Take some considerations to the storage and weight of all chain rode, but most boats and yachts today have anchor windlass to give you the ease of letting out and/or bringing in the chain. Take a look around the harbor the next time you anchor...You will see the difference as the boats move in the wind, whether they have all chain or line/rope anchor rodes. - 31901

Traditional Wood Dory Blueprints

By Jim Hallsey

So you would like to build a Dory? Good idea! It's a beautiful boat style. And when you are finished, you'll be adding towards the time-honored maritime traditions of useful boats. Few people choose this particular design, therefore your work will be demanding yet oddly gratifying. You will have every right to be proud to be the owner of your own Dory.

Finding a set of Dory plans will be the first challenge. Once you find a source (there are many online), your next move will be to acquire a set for your own. Once you get them and you've taken a short while to look at them, several things grow to be obvious. First, the plans should include a list of materials. You'll need to find a supply of these components. Some of them can be found locally, but sometimes you might have to order things from some of the many good Marine Supply businesses out there. Specialty hardware comes to mind, for example.oarlocks, etc. Your plans will most likely list some sources for supplies.

The plans may show what sort of support platform is needed to build your Dory. Some plans may call for an easy strong-back. Others may indicate a framework especially made for that plan. Follow the recommendation of the designer of the plans.

Now for the big one. You will have to determine whether you need to build outside or indoors. Both options have their strong points. If you build outdoors, you'll need to protect your project from the elements. The majority of outdoor builders work with a tarpaulin or another kind of cover. However, you are at the mercy of the weather. Those who build indoors, in the garage or workshop, must contend with the issue of enough ventilation. Paints, varnishes, a number of adhesives as well as Fiberglas resins possess harmful fumes that must be ventilated. Several toxic gases can be even flammable, therefore get a effective fire extinguisher.

Your plans may have most of these details included, however thinking about this stuff ahead of time will be worth the effort. Your boat is going to be a source of pride and you're sure to boast a little also. You'll be joining a group of proud boat builders when your project is complete. - 31901

Boat Auction Processes

By Rick Dupont

People are only starting to realise how popular boat auctions actually are. People choose boat auctions for a number of reasons, for instance in many cases you can get boats super cheaply when compared to getting from a dealer. Another reason is finance, If you have poor finance you may find it easier to get money loaned at an auction house then a dealer. Also many people find that rare boats are often sold via an auction from peoples estates after they have passed away, this is actually common.

Although there are plenty of different systems the thing is that most auction houses have the same process . The first difference is registration whereby some auction houses make people register and some don't it mainly differs depending on how the business wants to track the buyers. The fact is once the bidding starts the boat is for sale. Once the Auction has started every one that is interested bids and the higher bidder wins.

It's Easy To Understand Auctions

The auctions themselves are usually very simple: a boat goes up for bid, bids are put up and the boat goes home with whoever bids the most. In almost all cases, the former owner of the boat has to supply the boat auction house with paperwork that details a boat's history and proof of its condition. This ensures that the boat is not, first and foremost, stolen property and it helps to establish what a new owner can expect out of a boat, especially if it's purchased with damage to it.

Before an auction there are some very important things that need to be done. One of the most important things is you need to know exactly the type of boat you need this can only be done by research. When researching you need to focus on what you will be doing with the boat, what type of boat is right for your intended uses. The most important thing about buying your boat from the auction is to make sure that you buy the boat you want not just, buy for the fact of getting a boat, as there will always be more auctions. - 31901

Buying Used Boats Tips You Need

By Rick Dupont

Boats are a lot of fun in the summertime and you can use them for so many different activities. From water skiing to fishing, boats are definitely great to have around and if you want to save money and shop for used boats instead of new, there are a few tips you will want to remember. First and foremost you always need to take the time and shop around, to make sure that you get the best price. There are a few effective tips that will help you on your search and make sure that you get the best deal.

Of course because these boats have been used you cannot expect them to be in mint condition but if you buy a boat that has not been well taken care of, you are running the risk of it breaking down on you the first time you hit the water. The last thing you want, even if you are not paying much money for it, is an unreliable and rusty piece of garbage. Shop online through sites like Kijiji and Craigslist which always have lots of great listings but you will have to shop carefully. If the seller is located a fair distance away, chances are that you are not going to be able to check the boat out firsthand before deciding whether or not you want to buy it.

An important thing to remember is that you need to know the functions that are most important for you. The cuddy Boat is one of the best suited for over night and general boating activities. Make sure you always get an opportunity to see the boat in person before handing over cash. Try to keep on the look out for moss, or crack and smudges to be sure that you can be sure of the previous owners treatment of the boat.

Always check the Gel-Coat on used boats because this is supposed to be waxed annually. Make sure you ask the seller lots of questions to gain more insight, for instance you would want to inquire as to why they were selling the boat. Ask the seller why it is they decided to get rid of the boat, because this could give you a lot of insight into the condition of the boat. If they seem to avoid the question and do not want to answer your questions, you should be a little wary of going ahead with the deal.

The mechanical aspects of used boats are perhaps the most important of all. A boat can look fantastic from the outside but if the engine and other mechanical parts are junk, the boat is not going to be worth anything. It will be particularly important to check for heavy deposits of grime near the seals. These are all great tips that will help you when you are shopping for used boats and help make sure that you get the best deal. - 31901

The Best Wooden Boat Plans For The Beginner- Stitch And Glue

By Thomas L. Young

There is a lot to think about before beginners start searching online for wooden boat plans to use with their first boat building project. The space needed to build your own boat goes beyond what a typical DIY home woodworking project needs. You must choose a method of construction that best suits your experience, so it will be important to do some reading on several boat building methods.

By far, the stitch and glue method is the one most unskilled boat builders choose over all others. There are some simple reasons to pick the stitch and glue method rather than another one of the popular boat building techniques. One is that it can be completed in a short time, a couple of days at the most. Another is that you do not need any fancy tools, or advanced carpentry skills. All of the wood and hardware can be found at any large hardware store. The last thing that you must have is a top-notch set of wooden boat plans that are geared towards the beginner, with easy to follow directions.

Some more familiar boat building techniques that would be suitable for a beginning carpenter, require a frame to be built. Screws are usually used attach the wooden planks to the frame. What makes the stitch and glue so great for the novice boat builder is that you build it without a frame! The main material used is plywood. Other things that will be used are copper wire, a whole lot of epoxy resin, fiberglass covering and quite a bit of varnish. The most important thing you will need is a good set of wooden boat plans. One interesting fact is that boats made this way are said to be quicker, stronger and surprisingly light weight.

The procedure to follow when building a stitch and glue boat goes like this. First you get the plywood cut to the dimensions laid out in your wooden boat plans. Then you will "stitch" the planks together using the copper wire. As you progress, the shape of the boat begins to form. The epoxy glue is used to "glue" the seams. Eventually the wire comes out, and you seal it all up. To finish it all, the fiberglass sheathing soaked in epoxy resin glue is then applied to give a nice layer of protection. The final touch is to use paint or varnish to give it that smooth finished look.

To get a full and complete appreciation for boat building, you should ignore the expensive kits, and build the whole thing yourself. From the minute you download your wooden boat plans, you will be able to savor every moment along the way and relish the pride you feel as you put it into the water. As you move away from shore, you will be able to look around and realize that your hands created this entire vessel. When your friends ask you how you did it, you can smile and just reply that you did it with a little "stitch and glue. - 31901

The first thing that you require is the right kind of kite. In days gone by the equipment that was used was kept to the minimum, but as the sport became more and more recognized even the equipment has become more sophisticated. There are a variety of kites that you can take your pick from. Kites range between 1.5 square meters to 21 square meters in size. Ascertain that the size of the kite is in accordance to the type of weather in the area.

The kite board which is akin to a surf board is the next item to purchase. You balance on them when you are surfing over the water towed by your kite. It combines the thrill and skills of balancing one's body on a surf or kite board together with the expertise of controlling a huge Kite surf Kite. The movement is dominated by the wind conditions prevailing at that time.

It's almost unbelievable that control of the kite board as well as the kite lies in the hands of a single individual who has to gather the stamina as well as the courage and skill to maneuver both.

But surfing is no more a 'high risk' sport. Over the years technology has brought in more reliability to the safety equipment being used, the designs of the kite, as well as the release systems and commands. Even the board has foot strap bindings though expert surfers don't use them much.

You will learn from experts and instructors that the size of the kite should be in accordance with the force of the wind at the time you choose to kite surf. Preferably, a bigger kite should be used when the winds are low and smaller ones will help to navigate stronger winds, though a great deal of practice is required to acquire the necessary balance. Have you given enough thought to how much it's going to cost you to learn the sport as well as buy the necessary gear? In fact it's better to work out correctly, the costs involved and find places where reasonable prices are quoted. Life jackets, helmets, board harnesses, kite pumps etc are available in different ranges, so select one with good quality at a fair price.

'Size' matters here, i.e. the size of the kite should be chosen depending on the force of the wind. Experiment with smaller kites only if you are a skilled kite surfer able to battle strong winds. Gentle winds require bigger and more controllable kites. Be prepared for a number of failed attempts before you get the gist of the sport. Remember the controls lie in your hands and persevere to bring about a balance between the board and the kite to excel at the sport. The two types of kites generally used for this sport are Foil kites and Inflatable ones. The latter is preferred by most because of the ease it provides in launching and landing. The rider can have better control over it as well.

Almost every nook and corner of the world has kitesurfing activities. Most places will have provisions for learning facilities while expert surfers can go ahead and test the waters, since all equipment and facilities will be readily available here.

Also be prepared for unexpected changes in wind speeds. Learn to protect yourself in case of emergencies. Rests assured, it's high time you got yourself a good Kite and Board and tasted the excitement of this thrilling sport! - 31901

Choosing Homemade Carp Boilie Bait Ingredients For Big fish!

By Tim Richardson

Catching more big carp is much easier when you know some very stimulating details about bait components, how fish sense your baits, how to manipulate fish physiology to make fish want to eat our baits more and more! Many of the questions anglers ask about baits and fishing are pretty irrelevant compared to some of the most important which are so often over-looked because the angler is so conditioned to thinking like a commercially-manipulated angler instead of thinking like a fish which is far superior of course! When your thinking about baits choices and how to manipulate fish senses and behaviours in our favour against them begins with the fish themselves you have incredible potential power compared to anglers who merely follow the herd!

To begin with, when thinking about bait, why begin with the bait itself? Why not begin with the fish and what they are most sensitive to? When you know and understand what fish are sensitive to you have so much power over them. You can manipulate bait substances and exploit (and even condition) various fish senses against them to make them easier to catch - even against better and more experienced anglers!

As I have found in researching for my bait secrets ebooks, the majority of carp anglers in the UK and some other countries where carp fishing has become so commercialised, are dependent on expensive ready made carp boilies, pellets etc. You could say that the bait companies just want that trend to continue so they can extract as much money out of you as possible - after all, making customers dependent on products is one of the prime goals of those wanting to make big money but that gives them a huge amount of power over you which perhaps not too many of us can afford these days! When the price of ready made baits is the deciding factor in being able to afford to catch a few fish or even go fishing, you have to begin to wonder about making your own bait at vastly less cost with the chance to catch even more fish using your own baits with all the enormous satisfaction that brings!

Everyone has different limits in terms of their fishing resources so why let someone else fix what you spend on bait by them deciding the cost of their ready made baits when making your own is much more economical and affordable and just as productive if not even more so?! It is very easy to make certain that your own potently productive baits cost less than ready made baits. You need to have the knowledge to make sure that your cheap baits are potent in certain ways that guarantee success, and again this comes from having the right sufficient fish and bait knowledge to ask the right questions to keep on making your own totally reliably consistently successful baits!

Avoiding bait making mistakes can be avoided by learning from others who have the long experience over the years to refine their knowledge and bait making methods, thinking and insights etc. My 34 years of homemade carp bait making has gone through many changing levels of experience, feedback and changing awareness but well over 80 percent of all my homemade baits have caught from at least the first cast and mistakes are really only priceless feedback towards even better baits! Certain carp waters demand specific bait alterations because no water or fish stock or ecosystem is necessarily identical, and it is very important to know how to out-fish competing baits by leverage of unique bait substances to achieve extra edges over them in many ways.

Bait-making beginners usually make the most common mistake of falling into the trap of thinking like an angler and relying on personal judgements and opinions about bait substances and flavours to formulate baits instead of starting off with the fish themselves (which is obviously where the true power is!) Avoid limiting your bait success by getting to know your fish very well indeed inside and out! By focusing on the fish in the first instance and not on bait substances you will be thinking like a carp and be able to get the edge over the majority who merely think like anglers.

Certain bait substances do necessarily not work on their own in water and need a bait carrier substance with which they can work synergistically to bring forth their most potent impacts on fish senses. However, many bait substances can be said to be very habit-forming and I include the essential amino acids and particular non-essential amino acids found in protein ingredients additives and liquids in this group too. I am amazed at how many anglers feel they lack confidence in a bait if it has no strong discernible flavours or smell. Think about it; carp can sense substances down to a few parts in a billion and it will be very hard for the average carp angler to incorporate any substance in their bait that has no smell, taste or aroma or effect some sort of subtle electrical impact or difference on carp senses when in water for that matter that they will detect the presence of!

Carp are constantly evolving individuals able to sense new substances to various degrees even if foreign to their aquatic environment and so are able to monopolise new potential food sources - something we can exploit to maximum effect to catch more fish! Carp an be conditioned to respond to our baits in similar ways to dogs being trained to behave in ways their owner wants by rewarding them with snacks and designing unique new baits to provide both instant and long-term rewards certainly can condition their behaviours in our unique favour when regularly applied as well as affecting their future taste and smell preferences etc! You can choose specific ingredients, additives and liquids etc to manipulate carp modes of feeding or condition senses or certain modes of behaviours or exploit or adapt preferences leading to many more bites on your baits compared to other baits, so it really pays to choose wisely and find out more! Airport Security Checkpoints At The Syracuse International Airport

By Ernesto Cole

Do you live in or around the Syracuse, New York area? Even if you do not live close to the city of Syracuse, there is still a good chance that you have heard of the Syracuse Hancock International Airport before. In fact, if you live somewhere in Upstate New York, there is a good chance that you have used the airport or will need to in the future. For those reasons, it may be a good idea to famialrize yourself with the airport as a whole, especially if you plan on taking an international flight. Doing so will help to ensure that your international travel is all that you expected it to be.

Perhaps, the most important thing to learn about the Syracuse Hancock International Airport is the airlines that service the airport. As with most other airports, the Syracuse airport only has a limited number of airlines that offer travelers service. Just a few of those airlines include American Eagle, Continental, ComAir-Delta Airlines, JetBule, Northwest Airlines, United Express, Allegheny Airlines, Mesa Airlines, Shuttle America, and US Airways. By contacting the Syracuse International Airport, you should be able to obtain a full list of airlines that offer service to travelers in or around the area.

Before arriving at the airport, you will not only need to ensure that you have all of the proper identification documents, the ones needed for international flights, but you will also need to examine how you will get to the airport. If you are unable to find a friend or family member to drop you off at the airport, you will want to examine local taxi or bus companies. In the event that you will be driving yourself, you will need to famialrize yourself with the parking. Since you will be flying internationally, you will need to park in one of the airport?s long-term parking facilities.

To protect your vehicle from the unpredictable New York weather, you may want to park in the parking garage. However, if money is a factor, you will want to make use of their outdoor, economy parking lots.

The airfield security checkpoints at the Syracuse International Airport are like all other airports. The only difference that you may find is that the Syracuse airfield does not necessarily have separate terminals for international and domestic flights. Although not all international airports do, a large number of them are making the decision to separate the two. Since you will be going through security checkpoints with all other flyers, even those on domestic flights, you will find that the security checks are all the same. Therefore, it will mostly be up to you to ensure that you are not bringing aboard an item that is illegal in another country, but allowed in the Untied States.

Although the Syracuse Hancock International Airport is small in size, when compared to most other international airports, the airport still has a lot to offer travelers. Whether you are looking to buy last minute entertainment items for your flight or have a small snack before you board your plane, you can easily do so at some of the restaurants and retail stops that can be found by most airport security checkpoints. Even though you may not have hundreds of airport shops or restaurants to choose from, you will find that the ones that are available have everything that you could want or need. - 31901

Learn How To Maintain Trolling Motor Parts

By Sam Patrolio

If you're luck enough to be in possession of your own boat, be it for leisure or for fishing, then you may be aware of trolling motors. These electric motors are often seen as having a number of advantages over the gasoline version. Usually the greatest positive factor is that such motors create very little noise. Also, as they require no fossil fuels you can be sure that you are not contributing to environmental destruction by adding to the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. To be able to enjoy years of the open water with no problems is going to require an efficient maintenance of the minn kota trolling motors parts , should your boat be fitted with this type of engine.

As electric motors work differently than the traditional gasoline variety they will require a different level of understanding and care. It makes great sense to spend time learning how they operate and what steps are required for maintenance.

The consequences of having a motor fail when you are a few miles offshore can be severe; the effort it takes to learn more about the trolling motor and parts can be an investment that may even save your life.

You will realise that the source of energy is different. Gasoline motors require filling with the fossil fuel at regular intervals. An electric motor will simply require powering from a battery charger, also at specific timeframes. It is possible to top up the batteries when berthed or even at sea. Just be clear that you understand the charging instructions correctly; damaged batteries are often expensive to replace.

Before you head out on any trip it pays to give the motor a quick once over for any damage or problems. It's surprisingly easy for weeds and old fishing lines to become wrapped around the propeller shaft. If you leave the safety of a dock without realising there's a problem then the repair costs can be high.

When you buy the engine there should be a guide that explains in detail the correct routine checks that need to be done on a regular basis. You need to become very familiar with all the contents of this guide. This includes the terminology and names of various components of the motor. If there is a problem it will allow you to identify the cause and make the right purchase of replacement parts. An electric engine will need as much maintenance as the gasoline motors.

When charging the batteries it is essential that you monitor the progress regularly. It has been known for battery chargers to be faulty which in turn can lead to too much power being given to the battery. Be aware that a trolling motor's batteries will need replacing every few years.

If you make the effort to understand your maintenance and operating manual in full then a trolling motor should work for thousands of hours without a problem developing. If an issue does arrive and you need to find a new battery or prop shaft then the best place to do so is online. There are a number of websites through which you can pick up boating equipment and spares. - 31901

Tips For Buying Second Hand Sport Fishing Boat

By Karen Mushett

If you have a tight budget and want to get a used sport fishing boat as opposed to a brand new custom sport fishing boat. Well you will definitely be able to save yourself money this way, and you will probably even be able to find a boat for half the price that you would regularly pay.

However, you do need to be aware that if you are planning on getting a used sport fishing boat, you are going to need to shop more carefully instead of just getting whichever you prefer. You are going to need to make sure that the used sport fishing boat you are considering buying is in good condition and is actually going to be worth buying at all.

The last thing that you want is to get all excited and buy a used sport fishing boat only to find that it is a lemon. There are a few tips that are going to help you make sure that you are going to get a boat worth your money.

Ask Questions

For one you are going to need to make sure that you ask a lot of questions of the seller who is offering the boat. Try to get to know them as well as the boat, so you can see that they are an honest and reputable seller that you are going to be able to trust in. Make sure that you get a good background on the boat, such as what make and model it is, how many years the seller has had it, and how well they treated it.

Test Drive

Also you should test drive the boat before buying. You would do this with a car, and so why would you not do it when you were buying a boat? Especially if you are going to be buying a used sport fishing boat, you want to make sure that the boat runs properly and you are only going to be able to see this when you take it out for a test drive.

Consider Price

Considering the price is more important than you probably realize when it comes to buying a used boat. Basically if someone is practically giving a boat away, more likely than not this means that the boat is not going to be worth buying. - 31901

Living on a Sailboat...it is Frugal Retirement Living

By Gary P Pierce

Frugal retirement does not have to be mean denial or doing without. It is not necessary to eat dog food or dumpster dive. Does living on a sailboat sound good to you?

The recent economic mess we are experiencing is causing some shuffling...or worse canceling...of retirement plans. If you are retired or thinking about retiring you know what I am saying. Our retirement accounts have taken hits. You are not alone. Don't give up retiring just yet.

Have you thought of retirement lifestyles that are not only cheap but fun as well? We lived aboard a sailboat, in the Caribbean, for eight years...I know, someone had to do it. It was the highlight experience of our 35 year married life. We had a ball and did not spend much while we had fun.

How is sailboat life frugal or cheap? We lived on our boat, a 35 foot Island Packet, in the Caribbean. From the British Virgin Islands to the north, to Venezuela and Trinidad in the south. We spent around $1,000 a month while we were on the boat. We lived quite well and spent next to nothing. How are you going to spend a lot of money when you are anchored? The closest thing to spending money is a fisherman coming up with a lobster, conch or fish. Sometimes you can barter, fishermen need cold beer just like you and I.

You will have fun living on a sailboat...no surprise there. We enjoyed each island we came to...usually in the company of fellow boaters. We hiked and explored all of the island. We met locals that were very happy to share their island. We avoided the tourist places and experienced the real Caribbean, all without spending a lot of money.

How much did we know about sailing?...Not much. Please don't believe you have to be an old salt to live this lifestyle. Once you get to the islands (Windward's and Leeward's) your longest journey between islands is 90 miles or 16 to 18 hours. The islands are , save Anguilla and Anegada, very mountainous so you can see where you are going. Your GPS takes care of the tough stuff. What a great invention.

Living aboard a sailboat can be a fun and frugal way to retire. We enjoyed this this great way of living for eight years...so can you. - 31901

Background Of The Inflatable Boat

By Wyatt Crouch

The earliest attempt of Inflatable Boats were observed by ancient carved images of animal skins filled with air being used as one-man floats to cross rivers. These were before the days of air compressors so they were inflated by mouth. Often these images were mistaken for early scuba gear, but in fact they were the first generation of Inflatable Boats.

The 1st Duke of Wellington in 1939, Arthur Wellesley had tested the development of the Inflatable Pontoon Boat during his term as the Leader of the House of Lords. Then in the early 1900s due to technology advances in the manufacturing process of rubber, it was then possible to make the Inflatable Raft from rubber. Obviously during this time period, the Inflatable Boats were not mechanically propelled, so the only way to navigate these Inflatable Rafts was to paddle. Due to inherent flaws in the rubber manufacturing process the Inflatable Boats tended to split at the seams.

The loss of the Titanic in 1912 and the ensuing WW1 and the losses of many war ships that fell casualty to the indefensive tendencies to the submarine torpedo, Rubber Rafts gained popularity. The main reason for such a loss of like on the Titanic was due to the unthinkable fact that there were less than half the necessary lifeboats aboard her than were necessary for each person aboard to have a space.

This disaster was shortly there after created the initial SOLAS treaty to avoid such catastrophes again. The main premise of the SOLAS treaty was to ensure that there were adequate numbers of lifeboats aboard all vessels so that every person had a space on a life boat in the event of an emergency. [http://www.imo.org/Conventions/contents.asp?topic_id=257&doc_id=647]

Cargo ships did not have a difficulty in meeting the new standards at the time as they did not carry many hands on these vessels; however War Ships and Passenger Liners had a very difficult task at hand. For the Passenger Liners to accommodate this had to stack the lifeboats where ever they could in order to meet the new requirements.

Goodyear had discovered a way to better manufacture the Inflatable Boats in between the two World Wars but unfortunately, the conservative though of the time held back its production. The inflatable boats that get produced were life rafts of square-shaped inflated rubber cylinders with a rigid floor. These inflatable rafts were stacked vertically aboard warships on deck.

In 1937 the design of the Inflatable Boat took a major turn. Pierre Debroutelle was the first person to develop the current U-design of the Inflatable tube. The French Navy adopted the design and gave it certification under their provisions. Then in 1943 with the inclusion of the wooden transom was patented. If you compare the Inflatable Boat of that time with today's modern Inflatable Boat.

World War II created a prominent need for a new version of the Inflatable Life Raft with the escalation of the number of submarine attacks against the War Ships and Merchant Ships due to the number of casualties

It was now that the War Ships found the real need for Rubber Life Boats which helped the rubber industry to yet improve again in quality of materials and production " now the Inflatable Boat was shaped like a traditional boat and was better than it had ever been before.

The Inflatable Boat has now traversed the battlefield into the recreation field due to its economical and versatile nature. If you ever wanted a boat, but did not have the finances for a traditional boat, today's Inflatable Boats are a logical and safe choice. - 31901

Saltwater Fishing - Hooking Up With Sharks

By Jerry Collinsburg

Sharks rule the open sea, they are very rarely the prey when it comes to other fish. This is why fishing for sharks can be extremely challenging and fun. So if you think you are up to the challenge to catch some sharks there are some things that you should know if you have not fished for sharks before.

Sharks can be found all over the world, most of them like water temperatures to be in the 75 degree water range, give or take. If you are serious about fishing for big sharks you should try and stay away from extremely warm waters.

There are some main fishing items you will need before you go shark fishing. This will consist of multiple fishing rods, the more lines you have out the better chance you have of catching a big one. These fishing rods and reels should hold at least 200 yards of line and at least 60 pound test.

A good fishing rod to use is a fifty to eighty pound class rod. You should not forget your harness and safety straps. In addition, you want to remember your bait and chum, running chum is the most effective way to trap a shark so be prepared for a mess onboard.

Depending on what type of shark you are going after, will mainly decide what kind of bait and tackle set up you will need. Some sharks like to swim really deep, while others will rise to the surface when they smell the blood, hook size is very important along with having a gaff if you plan on landing the shark.

Once you hook up with a shark for the first time, you better be ready and have your safety strap on. Some sharks will run form the boat while others will charge towards you making the fight easier in some cases, also some sharks will drag the bait while others will just take it in quickly with one bite.

Now that you have the shark close to the boat, your experienced sidekick will be able to help. You will want to hand wire the shark into the boat. Hand wires are meant to be sturdy and they will not break if you are attached to them. Do not wrap the wire around your hand because you want to be able to let go of the wire easily if you have to. If you are keeping a shark, you will need to gaff and rope it by its tail.

As sharks have been overfished, you should only keep a shark if you have plans to eat it, use it in a tournament or if you believe it is a contender for the world record. You can have your picture taken with a shark without killing it. - 31901
